Opening titles:- “In the year 1860, Baron Frankenstein was condemned to death for the brutal murders committed by the monster he had created…. The whole continent breathed a sigh of relief when the guillotine was called upon to end his life of infamy.” But, it is not to be.
Having made a deal with the dwarf assisting at his execution, Frankenstein escapes death and a priest is beheaded in his place. The Baron changes his name and, to the displeasure of the local medical council, sets up practice in the town of Carlsbruck. He has still to keep his promise to give the dwarf a new body, so his secret experiments continue, now with the help of Dr Hans Kleve, who has discovered his true identity.

Footnotes
This was actor Francis Matthews’ first film for Hammer. He later appeared in “Dracula – Prince of Darkness” and “Rasputin – the Mad Monk” (both 1966).
Richard Wordsworth had already created quite an impression with his performance as the infected astronaut in Hammer’s “The Quatermass Xperiment” (1955). He also appears for them as the hapless beggar in “The Curse of the Werewolf” (1961).
